I walked an 8 mile stretch in Des Moines from Army Post Road to the 80-35

interchange, stopping to write, photograph and draw. These are personal impressions are layered with memory, bearing witness to the haphazard physical and cultural geography of the space and raw good humor of its inhabitants, including me.

An actual street map of Des Moines serves as the matrix for the paintings and the digital collage underlying the animation. The perspective combines elevation with the aerial perspective of the street map, yet ultimately this is the personal perspective of the spectator, represented by the black and white figures with eyes on their clothing.
